Desarrollo de un índice de integridad biológica avifáunico para los humedales de la reserva de la biosfera pantanosa de Centla, Tabasco Colegio de Postgraduados

Se evaluó la salud de los Pantanos de Centla, Tabasco, mediante un índice de integridad biológica (IBI) utilizando a las aves como indicadoras. Se seleccionaron sitios de manglar y popal-tular con diferente grado de perturbación (conservado, semiconservado y perturbado). Un análisis de cambio de cobertura con imágenes de satélites Landsat MSS 1976 y ETM 2002 mostró pérdidas de cobertura de manglar de 21─31 % y tasas de deforestación anual de 0.8 ─ 1.2 %. El registro histórico de especies de aves fue de 328, detectándose 189 en este estudio, de las cuales 13 fueron nuevos registros para la Reserva. Nature vs. Nurture: the Making of the Montado Ecosystem Ecology and Society
The southern Iberian Peninsula is dominated by a savannah-like ecosystem, the montado, which is a typically Mediterranean cultural adaptation to generally poor productive areas. Montados are exploited for three main uses: forestry, agriculture, and extensive grazing, in proportions that vary according to local conditions (more or less productive land) and historical circumstances. Because these ecosystems occur over a large geographic area (they occupy some 6 million ha), biodiversity would be expected to vary among montados. Scaling of Natal Dispersal Distances in Terrestrial Birds and Mammals Ecology and Society

Natal dispersal is a process that is critical in the spatial dynamics of populations, including population spread, recolonization, and gene flow. It is a central focus of conservation issues for many vertebrate species. Using data for 77 bird and 68 mammal species, we tested whether median and maximum natal dispersal distances were correlated with body mass, diet type, social system, taxonomic family, and migratory status. Body mass and diet type were found to predict both median and maximum natal dispersal distances in mammals: large species dispersed farther than small ones, and carnivorous species dispersed farther than herbivores and omnivores. We review characteristics of birds in boreal forests in the context of their ecological sustainability under both natural and anthropogenic disturbances. We identify the underlying ecological factors associated with boreal bird populations and their variability, review the interactions between boreal bird populations and disturbance, and describe some tools on how boreal bird populations may be conserved in the future. The boreal system has historically been an area with extensive disturbance such as fire, insect outbreaks, and wind. Collisions between aircraft and birds, so-called “bird strikes,” can result in serious damage to aircraft and even in the loss of lives. Information about the distribution of birds in the air and on the ground can be used to reduce the risk of bird strikes and their impact on operations en route and in and around air fields. The ability of a plant's propagule to reach microhabitats with the adequate conditions for seed germination and sapling establishment will have a direct effect on the plant's fitness. In the case of fleshy-fruited plants, the seeds are dispersed by frugivorous animals. One part of the seed dispersal process is the removal of the fruits, which contain the seeds, from the parental plant. Birds play several roles in agricultural lands and respond to habitat heterogeneity within the agricultural landscape. Agricultural intensification in Argentina has increased the sown area, mainly with soybean, fragmenting landscapes in the pampas and mesopotamic region. In Entre Ríos Province, the original Espinal forest has been fragmented, leaving remnant patches of natural vegetation, in cases modified by cattle grazing. These changes represent a potential threat for avian conservation. Abstract An extensive karyotype variation is found among species belonging to the Columbidae family of birds (Columbiformes), both in diploid number and chromosomal morphology. Although clusters of repetitive DNA sequences play an important role in chromosomal instability, and therefore in chromosomal rearrangements, little is known about their distribution and amount in avian genomes. Abstract Zonotrichia capensis is widely distributed in the Neotropics. Previous cytogenetic studies demonstrated the presence of polymorphisms in two chromosome pairs (ZCA2 and ZCA4). Here, we report results based on comparative chromosome painting, using probes derived from Gallus gallus and Leucopternis albicollis, focused on characterizing the chromosome organization of Z. capensis. Our results demonstrate the conservation of ancestral syntenies as observed previously in other species of passerine. We used conventional chromosomal staining to describe the karyotype of the critically endangered Lear's macaw, Anodorhynchus leari Bonaparte 1856. A diploid number of 2n = 70 and a karyotype similar to that of its congener Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus suggests that chromosomal rearrangements were not the main evolutionary mechanism in the genus.

Fourteen bird species were observed visiting one specimen of Alchornea glandulosa Poepp., 1845, at the Horto Florestal Navarro de Andrade, Rio Claro, São Paulo State, Brazil. Among them, three species seem to be the most efficient seed dispersers of A. glandulosa at the study site: Myiodinastes maculatus (Müller, 1776), Empidonomus varius (Vieillot, 1818) e Tyrannus melancholicus Vieillot, 1819. Besides to swallow fruit whole, these birds contributed with 68.5% of the total feeding visits. A. glandulosa fruit are not the mainly part of the diet of any one of the observed bird species, since they do not fit in the frugivorous specialized category. Immediatly following the AMOCO CADIZ oil spill, the S.E.P.N.B. carried out health centers for oiled birds from Finistère, and estimated the impact of the oil spill on seabirds. In the whole, 15 to 20 000 birds are dead because of the AMOCO CADIZ oil spill. 41 species have been oiled, among which 35 usually live in marine environment. The species most stressed belong to alcidae. The mortality rate (0,1 bird/ton of oil) seems to be, at. present day, the lowest rate never mentionned in the litterature.

Aim The assessment of biodiversity patterns under global changes is currently biased towards taxonomic diversity, thus overlooking the ecological and functional aspects of species. Nothura maculosa is a South American Tinamidae with a marked seasonal reproductive pattern. This work describes ovarían seasonal changes in this species related to gonadotrope (GTHs) population. Ovary and pituitary samples were collected monthly from adult birds during four annual periods. They were fixed in Bouin's solution and processed for light microscopy. The data of post-fixation gonadal weight were analysed using STATISTIX 4.0. Histological sections of the ovaries were stained with H/E, PAS and Goldner-Masson trichrome. Dawn chorus variation in East-Asian tropical montane forest birds and its ecological and morphological correlates Naturalis

Many birds in breeding seasons engage in vigorous dawn singing that often turns to a prominent chorus. We examined dawn chorus variation of avian assemblages in a tropical montane forest in Taiwan and tested the hypothesis that onset sequence is affected by eye sizes, foraging heights, and diet of birds. Chorus onset and duration varied between sampling months, but generally peaked in the prime breeding season. Overall dawn chorus length increased with, but mean duration per species was negatively correlated with, species richness. The inter-correlation among trait variables in phylogenetic independent contrasts was calculated and examined.
